The Best Way to Celebrate Earth Day 2020
And no, it’s not by posting a picture of a sunset on your Instagram story.
Earth Day this year is different, without a doubt. On “normal” Earth Days, town and city clean-ups, gardening events, and group hikes would take place. But with the spread of Coronavirus, people are staying indoors, limiting the amount of contact they have with one another.
Not surprisingly, the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down the rate of climate change. Nonessential businesses are closed, meaning less electricity is in use. In addition, fewer places to go means fewer cars on the streets, leading to less pollution being emitted into the air. Physical distancing has led to cleaner air and reduced waste. But because of the pandemic, many of us are unable to enjoy nature on this beautiful holiday, which begs the question, “How should I celebrate Earth Day this year?”
And here is my answer: as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in quarantine, we can use this time to reflect on the beauty of nature. If possible, go outside and take a walk. Challenge yourself to save electricity. Buy fewer products. Start composting. Invest in quality products over cheap products. These are just a few ways you can celebrate Earth Day this year.
Earth Day is a day of remembrance. Our Earth has brought so much good to our world, from the vegetables you eat to the vitamin D we get from the sun to the oxygen produced by plants. It is our job to take care of our Earth and protect it, which is not what we have been doing for the past few years. This COVID-19 pandemic is a chance for Earth to revive itself and for us to appreciate it’s true beauty. But it should not take a pandemic for us to realize that we need to change our habits to stop hurting the Earth. Earth Day should be every day. We need to constantly be in the mindset to change our habits to be “cleaner and greener”. And you can start by celebrating Earth Day this year.
As I end this article, I wish that you are all staying safe and healthy. Please remember to go outside and enjoy nature, if the weather allows. Happy Earth Day 2020!
